Complete Surrender to the King

Paul Hemmings presents from Mark 10:17-27, the story of the rich young ruler who asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Hemmings suggests that like the rich young ruler, we are all ambitious people who are always seeking "one more thing" - wealth, youth, power, self-sufficiency. He analyzes the portrait, posture and predicament of the rich young ruler. The ruler runs to Jesus and kneels before him, desperate for eternal life yet thinking he can earn it through his good works. Jesus tells him to sell everything, give to the poor, and follow Him. But the ruler walks away sad because he has great wealth. Jesus remarks how difficult it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God - it is impossible by human effort, only possible through God. Hemmings applies this by saying true repentance looks different for each person - we must be willing to surrender whatever impedes our full commitment to Christ, whether physical possessions or some other form of self-sufficiency apart from God. He calls hearers to faith and dependence on God, not self-reliance.

A Christmas Look

Altino Facey uses the account of the Wise Men recorded in Matthew to teach about a "Christmas Look". The sermon discusses the story from Joseph's perspective, focusing on his admirable character qualities. Joseph demonstrates faithfulness and righteousness in his intention to quietly divorce Mary according to the law, rather than publicise her apparent betrayal. He shows himself to be an honourable man by considering her reputation and not wanting to disgrace her. Finally, when the angel tells him in a dream to take Mary as his wife, Joseph displays obedience to God regardless of the cost to himself. The preacher argues these traits are not dependent on age - they can be exhibited both by young believers and mature believers alike. The Christmas story itself shows God working through the young lives of Jesus, Mary and Joseph to change the world. Thus the sermon calls on all listeners, both young and old, to follow Joseph's model - faithfully obeying God's word, honouring others, surrendering pride and independence to obey even when it's difficult. God needs more people like Joseph who will carry out his will despite personal sacrifice.
